Built within a former chemistry building on the University of Hawaii campus, this small gallery was created to display a collection of Asian and Pacific Island artwork bequeathed to the University by the late John Young.
With odd proportions and lacking natural light, the design balanced the room’s interior proportions and light sources to better serve a new role as gallery space. Asian screens with backlighting, and hidden source display lighting casts the room in a quiet balanced repose, while focusing dramatic spotlight on the works themselves.
